Boys and Sex and is a screamo band from Philly, I saw them at a house show when I was living in Philly and they were great live, if you're into screamo from before it was a dirty word (angel hair, moss icon, etc.) then there's a good chance you can get down to this album. While not as heavy as orchid or their contemporaries Boys and sex have a melodic quality that really brings everything together while still retaining that raw edge that, for me at least, defines screamo worth listening to. I find this album to be a treat in particular because there just aren't that many bands making this kind of music in the states anymore so it's nice to be able to have lyrics that aren't in french or japanese...or horribly mangled english. Anyhow, I'm into this and for fans of older screamo or, more recently, Snowing, this is a good one to pickup.

Shipwrecked, not Shipwreck
Shipwrecked, not to be confused with that Shipwreck AD band, is a hardcore band from Norway that released a demo and a 7" before breaking up. I don't really know much more about these guys than that honestly, a friend of mine turned me on to them and hooked me up with their EP but their demo is, in my experience at least, unattainable. Anyhow what I can tell you is that if you didn't know this band was from Oslo you'd think they were touring with SSD in the early 80's. If you like Negative FX then you're going to be into this record, it's just plain good - a straight shot of oldschool Boston inspired hardcore, fast, loud, and with a lot of frequent gang vocals. This is one of those ones you listen to in the car and find yourself clenching your fists and making an ass out of yourself while it plays - highly recommended. Get the 7" below.

Last Lights / Mountain Man tag team
This one gets to be a two for one since Last Lights and Mountain Man are, kinda sorta, the same band. First things first, Last Lights was a hardcore band from western massachussetts that did not get the kind of exposure they deserved. Tragically their vocalist Dom passed away and his friends released No Past, No Present, No Future as part of a a fundraiser for his funeral service. I never got a chance to meet the guy but everyone I've spoken to that knew him couldn't speak higher of him and, likewise, I can't speak higher of his band. Last Lights has some of the best lyrical content to come out of any hardcore album I've heard in years, maybe keeping in some kind of Massachusetts Wes Eisold hive mind or something I dunno, point is this isn't just mosh music. Songs build up and blow up, they manage to speak to a broad audience while focusing on personal themes and concepts, and they are always, always, fucking pissed. This is one of my favorite hardcore albums to come out in the past few years and definitely worth the download, in fact what you really ought to do it download, understand that it is so good, and then buy it.

Mountain Man, in this vein, was the band formed by the remaining members of Last Lights. This band picks up incredibly close to where Last Lights left off and has already started to pull together a very respectable list of shows with a wide range of bands. Their 10", titled One, comes out with the same teeth grinding intensity that their previous efforts put off, building into an album that seems to slip easily between New England hardcore standards of fast, circle pit, thrash to slowed down and pulled out stomp. Grab the jams below.

gordon solie motherfuckers
Gordon Solie was simply the best announcer the WCW had, period. Gordon Solie Motherfuckers were the best hardcore band named after a professional wrestling announcer hands down...This band was infamous for the sheer insanity of their shows, bottle rockets, fire crackers, throwing chairs, smashing computer monitors, and most notable singer Tony Erba's penchant for smashing things with a chain at shows. Power Bomb Anthems No. 1 was one of two releases put out by GSMF, the other being a 7",
which were released as a side project to Erba's other band, one of my favorites, 9 Shocks Terror. I remain constantly amazed this band came out of the midwest but shit did they rip: straight forward, pissed, boiled down hardcore, worth a listen on its own and a must for fans of 9 shocks.

go it alone
Go It Alone is a classic example of me missing opportunities, I got into this band too late to see them live and it gets me to this day. Growing up on hardcore from the north east this band strikes surprisingly close to home considering they're from Vancouver. Go It Alone play fast, youth crew style hardcore I would more associate with Boston or maybe DC - which I guess makes sense since they claim Battery as an influence. In Vancouver Gold, their debut release (if you exclude their early 2000s demo cassette), Go It Alone set the stage for themselves, playing fast, pissed, youth crew hardcore that reflects their town and themselves. This isn't your generic sing along music, the content and emotion in each song is pure grit and deeply personal, a good reminder of why you started listening to this shit to begin with.

oh the japanese
japan is a trip, i had the opportunity to go there for a bit a few years back and it is a serious cultural skull fuck. All men in black business suits and immaculately dressed women in high heels on bikes and then, out of nowhere, BAM 16 year old girl in a full on head to toe dinosaur costume just walking down the street with her friend dressed like a french maid. Given the cultural divide between the old guard and the youth I guess it's no surprise to find a band like Swarrm in the mix over there. Partially born out of Hell Child Swarrm is chaos as only Japan does it, teetering on the edge of complete insanity. Blistering grind guitars and screams like a possessed wounded animal over incredibly tight drums and song structure. I mean shit - the intro to this album is a mandolin solo followed by pure evil. Nise Kyuseishu Domo (Three Imitation Messiahs) is Swarrrm's second full length and probably their album I listen to the most, give it a listen below.
